About Chabad of Albania
Chabad of Albania serves as the Jewish center for the entire country, welcoming locals, tourists, business travelers, and anyone seeking a Jewish connection in the heart of Tirana. Whether you are visiting for a day or living here permanently, Chabad of Albania is your home away from home.
Our Story
The Jewish community in Albania has roots going back nearly 2,000 years. Jews first arrived on the shores of southern Albania as early as 70 C.E. The remains of an ancient synagogue dating from the 5th century were discovered in the coastal city of Saranda, a testament to the deep Jewish heritage of this land.
Albania holds a unique and honored place in Jewish history. During World War II, it was the only country under Nazi occupation whose Jewish population actually increased. Albanian families, guided by the code of Besa — a sacred promise of hospitality and protection — opened their doors and risked their lives to shelter Jewish refugees from across Europe.
In December 2010, the Hechal Shlomo Synagogue was inaugurated in Tirana, and Rabbi Yoel Kaplan was appointed as the first Chief Rabbi of Albania, marking a new chapter in the revival of Jewish life in this welcoming nation.
